Hawaiian Bistro

Hawaiian Bistro is one of the newest addition in Pantai Indah Kapuk area, located a few units away from the famous Hakata Ikkousha. The place is bringing a new color for Jakarta foodie to try, and yes, it is Hawaiian food!

Without any hesitation, I dragged David (as usual) to accompany me for lunch last Saturday. The place occupied one shophouse, so it's kinda narrow on the first floor. But the second floor was a lot wider and brighter, and decorated with Hawaiian details like Lei (Hawaiian flower necklace), the orange lifesaving tubes, and Hawaiian paintings on the wall.

Bistro Bento (IDR 72.000)
I was confused between Bistro Bento and Loco Moco, but I think I made the right decision. Basically it was Fish Katsu, BBQ Beef, Spam (pork), and Fried Chicken on the top of the rice, served with a choice of Fresh Vegetable Salad or Macaroni Salad. My favorite was the beef and chicken, they just got seasoned right. And the macaroni salad was a very nice option for people like me, who can't eat raw vegetables, so the salad doesn't ended up left on the plate.

Paniolo BBQ Mix (IDR 69.000)
Their famous trio BBQ (Chicken, Beef, and Short Ribs) served with two scoops of rice (as how they always served it in Hawaii), and choice of salads. The same BBQ as I had in my plate, but with 3 kind of meat. Heaven indeed.

Chocolate Ice Cream (IDR 15.000)
They were giving free Ice Cream (Chocolate/Matcha/Ogura) if you like their Facebook and follow their Twitter. So how could we resist freebies?

Paradise Dynasty

Paradise Dynasty is another chinese restaurant under the management of Boga Group (alongside with Paradise Inn, Ten Ten Tempura, Pepper Lunch, etc), specializing at La Mian and Xiao Long Bao. Their newest branch has opened at Central Park Mall recently, but I haven't got time to try it even though it's just a few steps away from my office. Until I saw their vouchers at Disdus.

There are two kinds of menus sold at Disdus, the halal package and the non-halal package. I bought them both. And also ordered some more dish to accompany the dinner. So this post is a compilation of what we had during our two times dining at Paradise Dynasty.

Steamed Shanghai Chicken Dumpling (IDR 45.000) & 8 Flavored Signature Xiao Long Bao (IDR 88.000)
The 8 Flavored Xiao Long Bao is the signature dish of the restaurant. At the center is the original flavor, and going clockwise from the green one are Ginseng, Crab Roe, Garlic, Cheesy, Szechuan, Black Truffle, and Foie Gras flavor. I like the Original the most, and my second favourite is the Szechuan. Eating this dish for me is a unique experience, since at first we doubted some flavors. But overall it turned out great. Their Shanghai Chicken Dumpling is also a good option for the non pork eater.

La Mian with Sliced Pork in Signature Pork Bone Soup (IDR 55.000) & La Mian with Dried Shrimps and Scallion (IDR 48.000)
La Mian is their other specialty. The noodle is very thin but tasted really good. For me the La Mian with Dried Shrimps and Scallion looks unappetizing, because it's accompanied with no meat (as you probably have known, I'm a devoted meat lovers. And dried shrimps, in my dictionary, doesn't count as meat.). But the seasoning and the soup was unexpectedly great.

Pork Dumpling with Hot Chilli Sauce (IDR 40.000)
It's very oily and hard to pick with my chopsticks, but once you get it, it's worth the effort. Savory and tasty pork filling, wrapped with soft dumpling skin and dipped into spicy sauce. Love it.

Sweet Sour Chicken (IDR 58.000)
Chicken meatballs and that gorgeous sweet sour sauce, I personally really like it. The sauce is tangy and glazy and got a hint of paprika taste, combined with the finely seasoned chicken meatballs.

Sauteed Shrimps Garden Green (IDR 88.000)
Fresh shrimps, but a little lack of seasoning.

Sauteed Spinach (IDR 55.000)
In my opinion, it tasted similar in every chinese restaurant.

Vegetable Spring Rolls (IDR 25.000)
Paradise Dynasty is also offering limited dim sum selection, but this one tasted pretty ordinary.

Red Bean Pancake (IDR 35.000)
Perfect sweetness to neutralize all the savory dishes we've eaten before.

Djournal Coffee

I'm not a big fan of coffee and desserts, but I'm definitely a fan of Ismaya Group. So a couple weeks ago I went to their second newest outlet in town, Djournal Coffee, to try their happening Nutella Cake. Unlucky me, the barista said that their Nutella Cake was not available that time. A little disappointed, I took a short glance at their available cakes selection, and went for their Gingerbread Tiramisu (IDR 22.727). And I also ordered Iced Salted Caramel (IDR 35.455) to accompany my cake.

It turned out that my Gingerbread Tiramisu tasted very good! The texture is soft, and its not too mushy like other tiramisu. The gingerbread itself is well balancing the cake with its crunchy texture and strong ginger taste. I love love love love it! I usually cannot finish a portion of tiramisu by myself, because it's too mushy and creamy (I love creamy food, but savoury creamy, not the sweet one), but after finishing this cake by myself, I think I could still go for second round. lol.

Their Iced Salted caramel was also good, I love that even though it has 'caramel' on the name, the coffee taste still came strong, but not overpowering the salted caramel. As always, Ismaya has never let me down on their food, concept, and ambience. Next destination is Colette and Lola, so hang in there and wait for the story!

Martabak Manis Sinar Bulan

Martabak always reminds me of my childhood, when me and my sister waited for my father to come home after work and brought us a box of martabak. Or sometimes he brought us to the outlet to see the making of our favourite choco peanut martabak, because he knew we would loved to. And it's always been the same martabak outlet since we were kids until now: Martabak Sinar Bulan.

Nope, this one is not the super-famous-and-super-expensive Martabak Sinar Bulan in Muara Karang. The outlet is located at Tanjung Duren, occupying a humble corner across ILP English course. The owner is a kind uncle born in Bangka, and our family has been their loyal customer for a very long time that now his son has started to replace his father's position in the outlet. Oh and the owner and the Martabak Sinar Bulan in Grogol's owner are brothers, so probably their martabak taste similar.

My father always says that their secret of delicious martabak lies in the stove. While others has started to use gas stove, they still stick with their old charcoal stove. It is believed that cooking martabak with charcoal stove will make the martabak cooked evenly (because the gas stove's heat is centralized in the middle), and make the aroma stronger. But I think making martabak with smile is their other secret. And don't forget cleanliness, here they always clean the station right after they finished with a box of martabak.

Our favourite is their Martabak Coklat Kacang/ Choco Peanut Martabak (regular IDR 45.000, special IDR 70.000). Well actually I prefer the Martabak Keju/ Cheese Martabak
(regular IDR 50.000, special IDR 75.000), but my family likes choco peanut better, so the most voted always win. The differences between the regular and special martabak is the butter in the inner side. Regular martabak uses Blue Band, while the special one of course uses Wijsman Butter. The butter for the outer skin of the martabak here always uses Wijsman Butter.

Their other specialty is the Martabak Kering/ Crunchy Martabak (IDR 30.000). This one is filled with chocolate, peanut, and cheese. It tasted kinda like crepes, but made with martabak dough. And it's also slightly thicker and more crunchy.

Well I will skip explaining the taste in detail, you know we wouldn't be their loyal customer for more than twenty years if it doesn't taste that great. I cannot guarantee that this is the best in Jakarta, since I think Martabak Pecenongan is also great but I rarely go there, and I haven't taste Muara Karang's Sinar Bulan. But this one is definitely the best among all the martabak outlets and carts line in Tanjung Duren street. Go give it a try.

Outback Steakhouse

I've always had an eye for Outback Steakhouse since long ago. Unfortunately, none of their three branches in Jakarta (Ratu Plaza, Pondok Indah, and Kuningan) located near my house, so I haven't got time to try it. Until last April, Outback Steakhouse finally made it's first appearance on Disdus! I immediately bought two vouchers, each voucher worthed IDR 200.000 at the price of IDR 110.000.

Last week I went to their newest outlet in Kuningan City to redeem my voucher. It is located at the ground floor, right next to the entrance. The venue was very spacious, the ceiling is high, and direct sunlight from the outside strikes through the facade window and brought us warmth. The interior was simple and elegant, mainly dominated by the wooden pattern combined with black color.

We were greeted by the compliment bread. I don't know whether I was really hungry, or this bread really tasted great. It's a wheat bread, but it's warm and soft and chewy and I wanted to ask for more!

My main course was the Ribeye Steak (IDR 229.000 for 8oz), served with two side dishes. It was said in the menu that the steak is seasoned and seared with their 17 secret seasoning blend, and they won't keep it secret if it's for nothing. That is excactly how a steak should be, tender and juicy and the spices blended perfectly with the meat that we don't need any sauce to compliment it.

As for side dishes, Outback Steakhouse offers four side dishes to be selected: Green Vegetables, Mashed Potatoes, French Fries, and Pilaf Rice. I chose their Mashed Potatoes and Pilaf Rice. The mashed potatoes was superb! It's not all crushed, you can still taste the rough potato texture between the soft potatoes. Well seasoned, and the gravy was also delightful. Pilaf rice tasted a little spicy, but still good.

David chose Ribs and Alice Springs Chicken (IDR 229.900) for his main course. Alice springs chicken is a flame grilled chicken breast topped with sauteed mushrooms, crisp strips of beef bacon, melted Monterey Jack and Cheddar and finished with honey mustard sauce. While for the ribs, it's said in the menu that each rack is smoked, grilled to perfection, and brushed in a tangy BBQ sauce. Well each words in that line are amazingly true.

Our lunch experience in Outback Steakhouse was indeed very satisfying. The price wasn't cheap at all, for our meals and drinks we paid with the disdus vouchers worth IDR 400.000 plus we have to add almost IDR 200.000 in cash (oh I should have bought three vouchers instead!).  But it's all worth it, great meal doesn't come in cheap price, right?
